Nothing killls enthusiasm and enjoyment more than the dim blurry wobbly images from this type of setup. Unfortunately, there is such a thing as "worse than nothing". I feel like understanding how difficult it can be with improper tools only increases your appreciation for the modern upgraded version.Įdit: after researching, the shitty finderscope was not actually missing anything… it’s just really poorly designed and impossible to align with any consistency.

The night and day difference in quality you’ll find when you finally upgrade will feel like going from a 1980s economy sedan that shakes at highway speeds and smells like old cigarettes to a modern 2022 coupe that reliably gets you where you want to go and is actually a pleasure to use. Save up until you can afford one of the recommended beginner scopes mentioned in the sticky. Don’t waste money on adapters or anything. My suggestion is to use it as is for right now.

Hey, I first got into astronomy after a similar Tasco garage sale purchase! The finder scope was horrible (I think it was missing a tensioning spring), the mount was wobbly and hard to use, the diagonal was garbage so I just took it out, the eyepieces were crap…BUT, I figured out how to use it, and how telescopes work, and saw Saturns rings for the first time with my own eyes. r/telescopes aims to be a high quality sub where users can discuss all things telescopes and astronomy, but allowing such repetitive and low-effort posts will drastically lower the overall quality of the sub. Low-effort content such as those complaining about the weather (we get it, clouds are bad), simple questions that usually result in one line responses (these should be posted in our weekly discussion threads instead), general 'shitposting', memes, etc.

Titles should be descriptive about what you're discussing/posting. Titles should not be 'clickbaity' nor self-deprecating - we're all here to learn so there is no point in calling yourself a 'noob' and/or putting yourself down. Concept art is not permitted, nor is content not relating to visual astronomy/telescopes.

Non-civil behaviour such as insulting, flaming, etc, will not be tolerated. You can post used item ads here, but do post them on other communities or websites such as Cloudynights, Astromart, etc. There are other subs and communities for this. Links to petitions, surveys, crowdfunders, and other advertisements to sell your own products are prohibited here. Failure to read and posting "which telescope should I buy" will result in your post being removed and you being referred to this guide.
